This unlikely conglomeration of clockwork wheels, metal drums, and hand cranks is designed to precisely measure and compensate for slack and tension in the rigging. A skilled operator can manipulate the entire rig with one crank. The complexity of the device makes it only usable on the smallest of ships, however.
