These noisy contraptions have reinforced oak planks attached to them, with long iron spikes at the end. Normally upright, when the device is activated, the plank is fired down in a short arc, where the spike hopefully embeds itself in the deck of an enemy ship. While effective, this makes it very difficult to disengage from the boarding action.
